No, I don’t mean food. This is my friend Denny Pallay. He retired from working on the railroad in Northeast Ohio back in January. In the fall we chatted over coffee and he shared with me this idea that lined up with his passion for working on cars. He lives near our church and is in tune with the needs of people in the neighborhood.
It’s really quite simple. Denny loves to work on cars, and that includes maintaining them. Since there are so many people who don’t have much money and don’t know much about cars, he thought it would be a great idea to show them how or even fix their cars for free.
Friends, you’d be hard pressed to come up with an idea more missional than that. Missional is about being sent, and Denny has the sent heart for the community he lives in. And, by tying it in with what he loves to do, he has found his missional sweet spot. Denny’s idea is a great sample of what any Christian can come up with to serve their Savior by serving their community.
We had to come up with a plan on how to start. It’s a new idea for us and so we chose to start off slowly and see where the Holy Spirit takes us. We dreamed about maybe graduating to being able to fix cars that have been donated and give them to needy families in the community. Or, maybe fix people’s cars for free. Or, maybe just occasionally offer free oil changes. Denny would like to offer classes on car care as well. The possibilities are endless.
We decided to start with a free car wash for any mom in the community. It will be the day before Mother’s Day. I shared the idea and the potential for what Denny is thinking about overall with our High School group and invited interested kids to let me know. Brandon, Josh and two Jessicas connected with me and agreed to meet yesterday as Denny showed them how to properly detail the car. Denny suggested my car. I think he wanted to start with the toughest job so they’ll know what they are up against.
Some of the kids know nothing about cars and would like to know more. Others just love to work on cars. Either way, Denny gave us all an education on how to properly wax a car. I had no idea!
Here’s the thing: we have no idea how this is going to turn out. It’s not just for kids, but this seemed a natural way to begin. Denny has dreams about what it could be, but he trusts God to do with it what he will. That’s a great sample of what it means to have a servant’s heart. Maybe this sparks an idea for you?
